Boatyards on the Broads

The following is a list of boatyards providing services and facilities to hire boats and private boats on the northern and southern Broads. The list includes brief information on each boatyard and my personal boat recommendations for boats bookable via the Hoseasons booking agency.

All the links are affiliate links. If you book your holiday via one of the links I will receive a small commission from Hoseasons. This will help me with web hosting costs etc, thank you.

Richardson’s

Richardson’s have been offering boating holidays for over 70 years. This is a big boatyard with a fleet of over 290 boats. They have boats to suit all tastes and pockets in their Platinum and Classic fleets. The welcome at the boatyard is always friendly, their efficient staff will have you on the water in no time at all, boats are often ready before their scheduled take over time, something that can’t always be said of other smaller yards! This is my ‘go-to’ boatyard and has been for many years.

My favourite boats here include Melody, a light and airy sedan style cruiser. It affords a 360-degree view from the saloon with it’s large cockpit accessed through patio doors. Melody has an air draft of 7ft 8In, which is quite low for a sedan style cruiser. The Nanni diesel engine is mounted aft and is very quiet when underway.

Broadland Orion is a ‘proper boat’ and an old favourite with many Broads holiday makers. It is a centre cockpit with a rollback canopy and fold down sides. It moves through the water effortlessly and is idea for trips under Potter Heigham Bridge to the Upper Thurne, tides permitting.

Broadland Galaxy is another centre cockpit boat this time with an electrically operated canopy with fold down windscreen. It moves through the water well and is economical on fuel powered by the ever-popular Nanni diesel engine. It is an ideal family boat offering a variety of berth options and two toilet/shower compartments.

Barnes Brinkcraft, a family owned and run boatyard situated in Wroxham on the River Bure. The boatyard has a modern fleet of over 80 cruisers from 2 berth to 12 berth. My personal favourites include Supreme Star, a centre cockpit style cruiser with sliding canopy and fold down windscreen. Benmore, another centre cockpit cruiser with a split sliding sunroof. Belmore a sedan style cruiser with a sliding roof and patio doors.

Faircraft Loynes

In 1880 John Loynes opened his boatyard beside Wroxham Bridge hiring out boats. The boatyard is still here today, owned and run by the Gresley family. They have a modern fleet of boats ideal for your family holiday for parties of 2 –11 people including the pet dog. My favourite boat here is Fair Ambassador, it has an air draft with the cockpit and canopy lowered of 6ft 9in, ideal for passage through all the Broads bridges subject to tidal conditions.

Summercraft

Summercraft is a well-respected family run boatyard with over 60 years experience. Their modern fleet of 2 to 8 berth cruisers include forward, aft and centre cockpit boats ideal for your family holiday on the Broads. My favourite is Gainsborough Girl with its flying bridge, offering dual steering positions ideal for the spring and autumn.

Bridgecraft

Bridgecraft are another family run boatyard with over 55 years experience on the Broads. They have an excellent reputation for customer service. Their boats may be a little older but they get great reviews on the Hoseasons website. My personal favourite is Tay Bridge a 2-berth front drive cruiser fitted with a handy GPS speed log. It’s ideal for the summer months with its split-sliding canopy and at only 28 ft long it’s easy to get into those tight spaces when mooring space is at a premium.

Silverline Marine

Colin and Lesley Dye together with their son Robert own and run Silverline Marine. The boatyard established in 1972 recently won the Hoseasons Boating in Britain Diamond Award for exceptional quality and outstanding service. Their boats are highly regarded by their customers, many book for the following year at the end of their current holiday. The range of boats include small 2 berth boats ideal for couples up to 8 berth boats suitable for two families. My favourite here is Silver Haze, built by the well-respected manufacturer Porter & Haylet. It’s a unique cruiser originally built for Connoisseur’s French fleets. It has dual steering positions with a high level sundeck, bow thrusters are fitted to aid handling.

Broom Boats

Brooms of Brundall are probably the most well known boat yard on the Yare. They started hiring sailing boats in 1912 and offered ‘skippers’ to sail the boats and do the chores.  After a long absence Brooms are again hiring boats through the Hoseasons agency. With sedan style cruisers being my favourite style of boat it will come as no surprise that my recommended boat here at Broom’s is the 35ft long Broom Captain.
