Oulton Broad

Oulton Dyke leads off the Waveney and into Oulton Broad. Oulton Broad like at Yarmouth has access to the sea via Mutford Lock and Lake Lothing. The lock marks the limit of navigation for hire craft.

Oulton Broad covers an area of about 0.5 square km. It is popular both for sailing and powerboat racing. The yacht station is on the east side of the broad where there are plentiful moorings, mooring is also allowed mid broad by mud weight. There are shops here, a pleasant park and museum and two railway stations a short walk away should you wish to visit Lowestoft.

The yacht station looks out over the broad to the old wharf buildings, now converted to modern apartments. There is a fee payable of just over £7(2003) to moor here if you intend to stay more than one half hour. The Harbour Master will help you moor, next to his office are the toilet and shower facilities and the Tourist Information Office. There are boat trips from Mutford Lock and day boats for hire near the yacht station.

A path leads from the yacht station around Nicholas Everitt Park with extensive views over Oulton Broad. It is a popular spot on Thursday evenings during the summer as people gather to watch the powerboat racing.

Lowestoft Museum is situated at the back of the yacht station in Broad House. There is also plenty in the park for children, including a paddling pool, crazy golf and trampolines. Refreshments are also available.

The flower beds in the garden are particularly attractive, the grounds cover an area of about 15 1/2 acres. From here it is just a short walk to the local shops.

Mutford Lock and lift bridge mark the limit of navigation for hire craft. It connects Oulton Broad with Lake Lothing and the sea at Lowestoft.

Adjacent to the lock is the Wherry Hotel, their moorings have  an uninterrupted view over the broad.
